Dave Weckl with the West Valley Jazz Orchestra - Sun Dec, 14, 2008 4:00 PM, WVC Theater
Join us for a tremendous, dynamic WVJO Guest Artist Series Concert with "one of
the 25 best drummers of all time" (Modern Drummer magazine) while supporting
the music scholarship fund at West Valley College. In addition to great music,
the Benefit premium ticket purchasers will have the opportunity to meet Mr.
Weckl and enjoy fine food and wine at a post-concert reception.
Legendary drummer Louie Bellson was originally scheduled to appear, but had to
cancel because of a recent accident. Please note the concert time is now 4 pm.
Dave Weckl is a phenomenal jazz artist that has played and recorded with many
legends of contemporary jazz and pop including Chick Corea, Mike Stern, Michael
Brecker, Michel Camillo, Simon & Garfunkel, George Benson, Diana Ross, Lee
Ritenour, and Robert Plant. He is known for combining strength, power,
technique, and impeccable time with astonishing taste and finesse. He has
released close to a dozen of his own recordings on the Stretch/Concord label,
and he tours the world regularly leading The Dave Weckl Band.
"Big band music and musical education have always had a special place in
my heart," said Weckl, currently touring with the Mike Stern Band in
Spain. "Iām honored to be returning to West Valley College to be part of
this fantastic music scholarship benefit and to play with this incredible
band." The
West Valley Jazz Orchestra
is a group of local professional
musicians with a 25 year history,
directed by Gus Kambeitz.

The Accreditation Commission has taken action to grant West Valley College an unqualified reaffirmation of our accreditation. The Commission set forth only five (5) recommendations for the College from the evaluation team that visited the campus in March. The team report also contained five commendations.
In describing their deliberations, the visiting evaluation team wrote, "The 2008 visiting team found the self-study to be well organized, well written, and easy to use. The team was impressed with the thoroughness of the study, the attention to which the findings of the previous visit were addressed, and the quality of educational programs and services."
The commendations:
- The faculty staff, administration and Board of Trustees are to be commended for building partnerships with the community in support of the college including the ongoing communications with the neighborhood, the support of the city and the passage of Measure H.
- The faculty, staff, and administration are to be commended for identifying new goals to improve technology including information technology, general education requirements and the implementation of goals to prepare students for a global economy.
- The faculty, staff and administration are to be commended for establishing the team work and commitment of all employees to ensure the success of the college in meeting its missions even in troubling times.
- The Board of Trustees is to be commended for its insights in initiating the Land Corporation Foundation as a jewel of opportunity for the colleges to serve the one-time and capital construction needs of the district.
- The faculty, staff and administration are to be commended for developing technology to better serve the instructional and support services of the college.
The recommendations:
- The team recommends that West Valley College regularly update and publish college-wide goals, and state the objectives derived from them in measurable terms, so that the degree to which they are achieved can be determined and widely discussed in order to improve institutional effectiveness. The team further recommends that district goals be established and regularly updated to guide the college in planning to continuously assure the quality, integrity, and improvement of student learning programs and services. Both levels of goals should be part of an ongoing and systematic cycle of evaluation, integrated planning, resource allocation, implementation, and re-evaluation.
- The team recommends that West Valley College formally and systematically evaluate the new program review process so that improvements can be made, as necessary, to ensure the effectiveness of this ongoing planning and resource allocation process. The team further recommends that developing and assessing student learning outcomes be effectively evaluated through established means, such as the program review process.
- The team recommends that the college implement elements of program review to ensure evaluation of distance learning courses and instruction is comparable to that of traditional instruction.
- The district and the college constituencies need to develop a plan to address the impact of the reduction in fiscal resources caused by the apportionment penalty assessed on the District this past year. Any fiscal impact that may affect the ongoing ability of the college to carry out its missions must be shared with the Accrediting Commission.
- The college constituencies work with the District administration and the Board of Trustees to establish district wide goals that address the quality, integrity, and effectiveness of the educational programs. These district wide goals need to be incorporated into the strategic planning process of the College as recommended by the previous visiting team.
