The Computer and Information Systems Department at West Valley College offers a complete computer curriculum using state-of-the-art computing equipment. Students may choose a Business Applications option or Computer Science option (A.S. Degree or Certificate). The West Valley College counselors will aid in choosing the option that best meets the student's needs.
The department's curriculum is grouped into four areas of interest. For those interested in general knowledge about computers and their applications, the Department offers introductory classes. These classes are often required for advanced study in business or other degrees and may be transferred to four-year colleges. A second area of emphasis is Business Applications where the emphasis is on the development of computer information systems within organizations. The third area is Computer Science, focusing on the study of programming languages and computer operations.
The general skills developed in computing also apply across most fields of employment where the computer is used as a tool.
The Computer and Information Systems - Java Programming Emphasis Degree or Certificate in the Business Division is designed to prepare students for careers in software development using Java. Students have the opportunity to add elective Web Programming, (client-side or server-side), XML, Wireless Technologies, and Documentation courses to the certificate or degree. These additional courses are not listed in the degree and certificate requirements, they can be approved as a customized degree or certificate by contacting counselor Michael Byers, firstname.lastname@example.org.
Java courses transferable to universities are available in addition to WVC degree and certificate approved, non-transferable courses developed for updating programming skills. The Java series of courses begins with Java for non-programmers, developed for students new to code. Students with programming experience may enter the Java sequence at a more advanced level. Courses emphasize the development of commercial applications and are offered in day and evening sessions.
Most software skills are highly transferable to other jobs and industries.
