Patch & Utility Cuts
  • A patch is an area of pavement that has been replaced with new material to repair the existing pavement.
  • A patch is considered a defect no matter how well it is performing.  
  • No other distresses in the patch area are recorded within the patch. Other distresses in the patch area are used to determine the severity level of the patch.
  • If a large quantity of pavement has been replaced, it should not be recorded as a patch, but considered new pavement (several hundred feet).

Low Severity Distortion

  • Low :Patch is in good condition and is satisfactory. Ride quality is rated as low severity or better (ride quality is based on distortions severity levels).

Medium Severity Patch
  • Medium: Patch is moderately deteriorated and/or ride quality is rated as medium severity
Vehicles will experience significant vibrations, and some reduction in speed is needed. The surface of the patch has medium severity weathering and raveling; slight impact on ride quality.
High Severity Patch
  • High: Patch is badly deteriorated and/or ride quality is rated as high severity. The patch needs replacement.
Vehicles will experience significant vibratiions, and some reduction in speed is needed. Vehicles will experience excessive vibrations, and speed must be reduced.
