Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
EPA Office of Transportation and Air Quality (OTAQ)
OTAQ regulates air pollution from motor vehicles, engines, and the fuels used to operate them, and encourages travel choices that minimize emissions. These "mobile sources" include cars and light trucks, large trucks and buses, non road recreational vehicles, farm and construction equipment, lawn and garden equipment, marine engines, aircraft, and locomotives.

NHTSA Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFÉ) Regulations
Information on the CAFE program, including a program overview, related rulemaking activities, research, fleet characteristics and summaries of manufacturers' fuel economy performance since 1978. Regulating CAFE is the responsibility of two federal agencies: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). NHTSA sets fuel economy standards for cars and light trucks sold in the U.S.; EPA calculates the average fuel economy for each manufacturer.

FAA Inherently Low Emission Airport Vehicle (ILEAV) Pilot Program
Information on the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ILEAV pilot program including announcements, reporting requirements, summary reports and program guidance documents.

EPA's Cleaner Diesel Programs
The EPA promotes clean diesel engines to improve air quality and health while at the same time increase fuel efficiency and durability of diesel engines. While the EPA has programs to help diesel engines of today, these voluntary programs may become regulatory measure for the diesel engines of tomorrow.

Clean School Bus USA
EPA's Clean School Bus USA program brings together partners from business, education, transportation, and public health organizations to work toward eliminating unnecessary public school bus idling; retrofitting buses with better emission control technologies; and replacing the oldest buses in the fleet with new, less polluting buses.

SmartWay Transport
EPA created SmartWay Transport, a partnership with leading freight-haulers, retailers and manufacturers, to reduce fuel consumption from the transportation sector in the United States; emissions affecting human health, especially in densely populated urban areas; and greenhouse gas emissions.

Voluntary Diesel Retrofit Program
The Diesel Retrofit Program works to reduce pollution resulting from existing diesel vehicles and equipment by encouraging fleet owners to install pollution-reducing devices on the vehicles and to use cleaner-burning diesel fuel. This involves working with state, local, and industry partners to verify the effectiveness of pollution-reducing technology and to create retrofit projects around the country.

Mobile Source Program
Regulatory and other information on all vehicles sold in California including zero and near-zero emission vehicles, fuel cells, heavy-duty vehicle inspection program, on-board diagnostics, off-road emission reductions, voluntary accelerated vehicle retirement program (also known as the "scrap page program"), and search DriveClean.ca.gov - ARB's car buyers guide to find the least polluting vehicles on the market.

Climate Change
Information on the proposed development of regulations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from motor vehicles. Find information concerning climate change including Assembly Bill 1493 (Pavley) signed by the Governor on July 22, 2002.

The ARB staff, in coordination with the California Energy Commission and the local air pollution control districts, is developing guidelines to establish a Lower Emission School Bus Program. The guidelines will provide criteria for the purchase of new school buses and retrofits of existing school buses to reduce particulate matter emissions.
