This one-year Accounting Clerk Certificate Program is designed to provide basic training in accounting procedures which will enable students to qualify for clerking level accounting jobs. Accounting Clerk positions require applicants to have basic accounting knowledge and typically some computer training. The courses offered at West Valley College include a computer component designed to give the students working knowledge of the way accounting is done in today's technological environment.
For those students interested in pursuing a bachelor's degree, the department offers Accounting 10 and Accounting 11 which are transferable to most of the four-year schools in California for both accounting degrees and general business degrees. Students wishing to transfer should meet with a counselor regarding transfer requirements and transferability of specific courses.
Most of the jobs in the accounting field can be segregated into a "professional level" and a "clerking level". The professional level typically requires a bachelor's degree in accounting. The clerking level typically requires basic training in accounting procedures. Those with a bachelor's degree in accounting will also be qualified for numerous "non-accounting" jobs in banking, marketing, finance, and management.
