Program Information
The field of apparel design includes the design, manufacturing and wholesale sales of garments and accessories for men, women and children. There are many exciting career options for individuals who desire a rewarding, challenging and fast paced career. This short certificate will prepare individuals to work in a design room where they will have an opportunity to perform a variety of general functions. Common duties may include spec writing, cataloging fabrics and trims and the updating of sample boards. It is essential that these individuals understand the steps in the development of a sample product and the organization of an apparel firm. Because they will be called on to do many jobs around the design room, they must be flexible and responsible. The need to be able to work as a member of a team as well as independently.
Most apparel firms now use computers for some, if not all, steps in the design and manufacturing process. Experience with data entry, word processing and spread sheets is a basic requirement of most jobs. The ability to produce flat sketches and specification drawings using a computer is beneficial.
