CHS 006: 

CAREERS IN EDUCATION

Course Description

This short course is an orientation to careers in early childhood education, elementary school and high school teaching, parent education, and various jobs which involve work with children and families. Thorough description and information about licensing requirements, child development permits, teaching credentials, certificate programs and professional preparation for parent education are included. Students engage in a self assessment, discuss the trends regarding various jobs, and look at salary and training requirements for different professional roles.

Course Outcomes

  1. Describe different types of jobs in the field of education

  2. Survey the trends in today's society regarding educators, educational institutions, and the child care delivery system.

  3. Demonstrate an understanding of the state licensing, permit, and teacher credentialing requirements for teacher preparation and those adults who work with young children.

  4. Develop a personal sense of their own professional suitability for the field of education.

  5. Establish career goals and create an education plan which will help them attain their goals.

  6. Access the Child Studies Department resources, other colleges resources, and community resources available to assist them in attaining their goals.

CHS 002: CHILD GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT
I Course Description
A study of the child from prenatal through adolescent development. Child observation required.
II Course Outcomes
1 Demonstrate knowledge of the total child's physical, cognitive, emotional, social and moral
development
2 Identify stages of development as described by Freud, Erickson and Piaget.
3 Distinguish various observation techniques and approaches to studying child development
4 Evaluate cross cultural and societal influences on child development
