Events and Activities:

 

Read Across America (1171 children read to in seven local schools)
Good Teaching Conference (seven West Valley Students attended three day conference)
Cesar Chavez Day of Service and Learning (Capri Elementary 8 classrooms)
Teacher Appreciation Reading
Celebrate Your Future - Teach for Tomorrow Conference (40 WV Students attended)
Food Booth, Second Highest Income Booth
Co-sponsored Women’s History Month Film Festival
Multi-scheduled meetings, evening, noon and web meetings, 14 total
Newspaper articles (Norseman) of club in the last 3 issues.

Attendance:

 

Each ICC meeting has been attended by a representative of Teachers of Tomorrow.
Participated in every ICC event.

 

Benefits to members:

Currently membership is free to students.
Contextually benefit of concurrent membership in national SCTA is provided via grant sponsorship.
Access to all students via night, day and online meetings.
Meetings include pre-professional development opportunities, guest speakers, support and refreshments.
Leadership and officer positions available to all members.

 

Benefit to the College:

At “Celebrate Your Future” Conference at SJSU April 20, 2002, WV had one of the largest student representations.
WV is one of the first California Community Colleges to have a future teacher club on campus.
The club provides opportunities identical to teacher clubs at 4yr. CSU, UC and Private Universities.
More than sixty WV college students have been empowered by the growing community of future teachers.
Club succeeds in leveling the playing field – by providing the opportunities for professional development, classroom experiences, service opportunities, and leadership opportunities here at the Junior College Level.

 

Teachers of Tomorrow Membership was chartered February 21, 2002.  Since that day we have recruited students, created a niche on campus and in the community and grown to include more than sixty West Valley Students.  The TOTC have fulfilled our founding four (4) founding elements of our mission statement

What do you want from the club this summer?

More discussion on specific benefits to teachers (Health, Retirement)

What is Tenure - How does it work?

Fun event (BBQ, Bowling, Rafting, Camping)

Book of student evals on WVC teacher created. (Who is a good math teacher -- who should you avoid).

Partnership with Community Service Learning

Officer Elections postponed until September 2002.

Elect a "Information VP" who can take notes.

Create "GOALS" for 2002-2003 year.

 

What do you want from the club this Fall?

Move meetings to Thursday Nights instead of Monday's.

Split meeting into two sections 1=Fun meeting 2=Committee Work.

More events.

Visit local schools more often

Have a visitation of 1st or 2nd year teachers --- hear their stories get advice, etc.

Conference opportunities for K-12 teachers

Conference opportunities for Early Childhood teachers

Group community service project (Finger printing)

Maybe do an activity at local schools instead of just reading.

Resume in the tech lab.

June 2002 - NEA student leadership conference in Texas

We have a scholarship if someone wants to go.  Contact Mae as soon as possible.

August 4-9 2002 - SCTA/CTA/NEA - Summer Institute UCLA

    Issues will be an integral part of the four strands: Negotiations and Finance; Instruction and Professional Development; Communications; and Community College Association.  Below are links, fees, and more information:   www.cta.org

November 16-17 2002 - Fall Leadership Conference - Santa Clara

    The SCTA members established this conference to help all SCTA members acquire leadership and organizational skills needed not only while SCTA club members ---- but also as a teacher.    This conference is mandatory for all club officers --- and future officers.   Early registration is only $15.00.   This conference fills up fast --- so we need to register as soon as possible.   Our goal is to have the largest contingent there!!!

January 24-26 2003 SCTA/CTA Good Teaching Conference Burlingame

    Weekend of classroom management techniques, curriculum, learning styles and other topics of interests to new teachers.   This conference is designed for professional teachers --- but SCTA members are invited to attend.... (At a significant discount!).
