The meeting west by quickly this evening due to the fact we had so much to discuss.  Much of our time was spent on choosing "Reading" themes.  See the "TO DO LIST" below.    We also spent time talking about a sample teacher portfolio using the name "Ima Teacher".  We also talked about using the Tech Center for some hands on time making a resume.

We played some games and did a few sharing activities that resulted in many prizes.  In fact everyone that attended walked away with something.  The guest speaker was Mae Conroy the Teach For Tomorrow Program director.  She talked about teaching and showed a short video.   Some statistics she shared:

California Teacher Need:

In 5 years - 250,000 teachers needed

In 10 years - 500,000 teachers needed

When did new teachers make the choice to teach?

51%    Before college

38%    In college

9%    After College

1%    Not sure.

The Make-up of California Classrooms

25% school children live in poverty.

Majority of teachers are from middle class backgrounds

61% of students are ethnic minorities

22% of teachers are minorities

Taking Action to learn more about the profession student's should:

1.    Join a club or take a class.

2.    Visit their library or CalTeach web site.

3.    Talk with favorite teachers.

4.    Conduct reach on the topic.

5.    Enroll in college, or if you already have a BA then enroll in a credential program.

To conclude the evening Shauna gave out a copy of a few poems that she received during the SCTA executive board meeting.

Our task is to provide an education
for the kids of kids we have.

Not for the kinds of kids we used to have,
or want to have.

Or the kids that exists in our dreams.

Lest We Forget
Martin Niemoeller

They came for the Commjnists,

but I wasn't a Communist --

so I didn't object.

They came for the Socialist,

but I wasn't a Socialist,

so I didn't object.

They came for the trade union leaders,

but I wasn't a union leader--

so I didn't object

They came for the Jews,

but I wasn't a Jew--

So I didn't object

Then they came for me---

And there was no one left to object.
