Meeting Summary

January/February 2003

1.                  Meeting Times --- Adjusted

a.       Afternoon meetings are changing to every other Friday at 12:30pm. 

b.      See the updated attached schedule.

2.                  Bowling Night next Tuesday Night!!1

a.       2/25/03 7pm to ???

b.      Saratoga Lanes (Prospect & Saratoga Ave – Near the new Burger King)

c.       Bring your family or friends.

3.                  Club Rush

a.       All WVC clubs will have a table of information in the cafeteria.

b.      2/26/03 from 10am to 1pm

c.       We need - you – (club members) to stop by and work our table or just say hi.   Below are the shifts we need volunteers for:

                                                               i.      9:30 to 10:30 – table set-up.

                                                             ii.      10:30 to 12:30 – promote the club/answer questions

                                                            iii.      12:30 to 1:30 – clean up.

4.                  Food Faire

a.       All WVC clubs will have a table in the cafeteria – and sell food as a fundraiser.

b.      3/13/03 from 11am to 1:30pm

c.       We need - you – (club members) to stop by and help out in these ways:

                                                               i.      Donate some type of food – deliver to the table by 10:30am

                                                             ii.      10:30 to 11:30 – table set-up & food prep.

                                                            iii.      11:30 to 1:30 – promote the club/answer questions

                                                           iv.      1:30 to 2:00 – clean-up. (Take home extra food)

5.                  Experiential Learning – Public classroom survey – ethnographic research

a.       Morning Observations nearby – March 24, 28, April 11 (Others to be arranged)

b.      Overnight trip – Los Angeles March 21 - 25 (During Spring Break)

c.       Survey and demographic information being formatted this week.

d.      Mandatory Email for all participants to follow this week.

e.       Sign-ups in AAS50 on the board.

6.                  Read Across America

a.       Large turn out expected at Rosemary

b.      Have you picked up your book yet?

c.       There are a limited number of “Cat In The Hat” hats – reserve one today.

d.      Sign-ups in AAS50 on the board. (Hats go to those who signed up first).

e.       Reading is at 10:30am on March 7th.  Follow-up meeting after at WVC.

f.        Raffle for Dr. Seuss T-Shirts, Coffee mugs, Pins, Bags just for participants.

 

 7.                  New Leadership

a.       There is a new group of highly motivated leaders in our club.

b.      New ideas are being formed --- and more speakers and videos will be included in our meetings.

c.       Opportunities for more leaders ---- contact an officer if you are interested.

d.      New ideas about an elite/highly active status of members is now being considered.  This high status is for individuals who are willing to make a commitment to a high level of excellence not only in their academic coursework, but also participating in club activities and conferences in order to become not only “highly qualified” but also “high quality” teachers.  This will enable the club to recognize and reward these individuals who are committed to that level of excellence.

8.                  Build A Park - Community Service Opportunity –

a.       A community in Sunnyvale is building a park in one week’s time.  “Park Raising”.

b.      This is designed to be link an old fashioned “Barn Raising” / or “Habitat For Humanity” type project.

c.       April 11 two shifts available 8:30 to 12:00 or 12:30 to 4pm. (Sign-up with Deb Deb).

9.                  Conferences:

a.       Equity & Human Rights – Burlingame – 2/28 to 3/2    $25.00

b.      CAEYC State Conference – Sacramento – 2/28 to 3/2

c.       SCTA Northern Regional Conference – Hayward – 3/8/03   $5.00

10.              Trainings:

a.       Resume building – TFT March 5th 12pm & 5:30pm

b.      Education Careers Clinic – CHS & TFT - Learn about educational careers & credential process – March 19 5-6:30pm at WVC  & April 9th 6-7:30pm at Leigh H.S.

c.       Portfolio Process – TFT – April TBA

11.              Next Meetings:

a.       March 5th & 7th 

                                                               i.      Topic  = Guest Speaker – Katherine Moore-Wines – Update on political changes affecting education, how to stay in the “know”, and how to become “pro-active” for education and for children.

                                                             ii.      Activity = Choose Books / Time books - for Read Across America

                                                            iii.      Activity = Share Resumes (TFT resume workshop at 5pm before club)

                                                           iv.      Activity = Recap conferences --- workshops and speakers

                                                             v.      Activity = Sign-ups for Conferences & Activities

b.      March 19th & 21th

                                                               i.      Topic = Guest Speaker - Terry Shue – The environment as a co-teacher.

                                                             ii.      Activity = Plan – Week Of The Young Child

                                                            iii.      Activity = Plan – Art Activity & Display

                                                           iv.      Activity = Plan – Experiential Learning – School Survey’s

c.       April 2nd & 4th

                                                               i.      Topic  = Mel Levine Speech – ‘One Mind At A Time’ – Brain development and learning challenges (most everyone has at least one).  Learn how to recognize and understand how the brain functions and how that impacts students in a classroom. Insights into ADHD and ADD.

                                                             ii.      Activity = Finish planning for Week Of the Young Child

                                                            iii.      Activity = Recap conference workshops and speakers

                                                           iv.      Activity = Sign-ups for Conferences & Activities
