Goals for 2003-2004

Great Start!

Wow, what a great start of our club this semester!  We started in February 2002, and by the beginning of May 2002 we are club of the year!  Our membership has grown from a handful of founders to now over 60!

SCTA - Largest in California

The largest SCTA chapter in California has 200 members.  Our goal is 201 by the end of Fall semester.  We want to be the largest SCTA club in California!   Come to the June 10th 2002 meeting at 6pm to help strategize how we can do this.  We already have 61 members just since February 2002!  The SCTA also will give awards for the "Largest Chapter" and the "Chapter with the largest increase from the previous year".  We could win both awards next year.

Community Service Learning Partnership

To help us meet our mission statement goal, of community service and support, we have decided to partner with the "Community Service Learning" program here at West Valley College.  We will be:

planning/sponsoring 1 large service event a semester,
participating as a club in other service events,
requiring some type of volunteer work to be considered an "Active" member in good standing.

Human Rights, Poverty, Testing, Awareness & Advocacy

As part of our mission statement we have been keeping a pulse beat on issues concerning education, students, teachers and schools.  To take this concept further, our club and it's members need to become more of an "ADVOCATE".  We need to step out and become involved in issues that will concern us as future teachers.  We need to spread the word about Human Rights issues, Poverty, the inequity of "High Stakes" testing, and become involved in the political process.

How are we going to do this?

The club will be aware of issues that the members then can talk about, write about, and participate in.
We will send representatives to meetings, events, speakers, and rallies.
We will stand up in our classrooms and speak about the importance of voting, community service, and taking a stand (Advocacy) about issues concerning education, schools, teachers, students, poverty and inequity of "High Stakes" testing.

Newsletter

We will make a monthly news letter that will be sent electronically to all members - and be made available on our web page.  It is important to keep all members abreast of what is coming, and about what accomplishment we have made.   This will also be a forum to publish your works, essays, and stories.  Our first published newsletter will be in June 2002.   Please email the club with any ideas, stories or suggestions you might have.  We are also seeking members for the newsletter committee.  If you are not part of a committee yet this might be a good match.

CLASS PROJECT

We need to plan one CLASS project a semester in which we partner with other SCTA chapters, other programs, and outside public officals.   We need to form a committee to help plan this -- and we need some creative ideas.   There is an award for outstanding CLASS project.  Critia for the award is:

Meet expected objectives
Project include Active/Retired ESP or Higher Education Association members.
Did the project include other organizations?
Was the project publicized within the Association and/or community. (Association PR/ College PR/City or state PR?

Spring 2002 we our Read Across America event would have qualified - we just needed a little more notice to get into the association PR and newsletters. -----  Way to go team! ----  I think the Cesar Chavez day was also just like this!

Social Events

We all want more fun events this next semester and year.  Things like bowling, golfing, BBQ, Ski Trip, Etc.   We also would like a retreat sometime during the year.  Please come to the June 10th meeting at 6pm in AAS50 to plan the entire years calendar.  This is the time to give us your input and suggestions about the upcoming year.  Please come or at least email your ideas and suggestions to help make this club meet you needs.

Europe Trip

We have a sister campus in England!  Bright and Hove City College in the United Kingdom visited our campus last month.   The Principal is Ann Smith and the Director of Business Development is Neil Fisher.   The goal of the partnership is to provide students and staff with exchange opportunities, articulation courses and collaborating.

We have decided to raise funds and begin planning - so we can visit our sister campus and try to arrange a "summit" with student teachers over there.  We need to form a committee to research and coordinate this trip.  We need to form a committee to start some mega fund raising.  At our last meeting we tentatively set the month of August 2003.

While in Europe we also want to swing by and visit REGGIO.  All of our Early Childhood Education Teachers have probably heard of Reggio numerous times in their classrooms.  This town has an incredible early childhood program that any teacher can learn from.

Our objectives will be to visit student teachers, different schools, and Reggio.

***** This has been postponed until 2004 because of the war.

School Road Trip

This spring we are going to tour several urban and rural schools in the state and do a research/survey of the classrooms and technology experience of an average student.

The SCTA has several awards that we are competing for.  The awards are for service between April 2002 to March 2003. (Last year the deadline was March 8th - we had only been a club for a few weeks).
