Poverty

POVERTY

One of the largest impacts on a child's ability to learn is poverty.  The recent CTA conference stated that 30% of California's children live in poverty -- but 50% of them live in or near it.  (Copy of the speech is located here)  Another statistic states 39% are considered children of the  "Working Poor".

As a teacher, how can be educate our students if their basic physiological needs of food, shelter and safety are not being provided?

Just imagine the shift in education / literacy / unemployment that would occur if the money we spend on the "Sat-9 testing"  would be used to meet these children's basic needs?
