Major Requirements for
Associate of Arts Degree in Communication Studies

To earn an Associate of Arts degree in Communication Studies, you must complete 18 units of Communication Studies courses, selecting from the five categories shown below, as well as completing all other requirements for graduation. If you first enrolled at West Valley before the fall of 1997 and have been in continuous attendance since then, see the Communication Studies department chair for information on major requirements.

1. Select one of the following courses (3 units):

Communication 1 Public Speaking
Communication 10 Persuasive Speaking
Communication 20 Argumentation and Debate

2. Select one of the following courses (3 units):

Communication 8 Interpersonal Communication
Communication 17 Effective Listening
Communication 25 Improving Relationships Through Communication

3. Select one of the following courses (3 units):
Communication 4 Small Group Discussion
Communication 12 Intercultural Communication
Communication 18 Career Communication

4. Select one of the courses listed above that was not used to satisfy the three-unit requirement in that category (3 units).

Note: Some transferring institutions will count no more than 12 community college units toward a communications major; communication units above that number transfer as electives.
