Earthquake

What to Do in Case of... Earthquake

Immediate Actions:

If Indoors:

DUCK or drop to the floor. Take COVER under a sturdy desk, table, or other furniture. Hold on to furniture you are under and protect face.

INSTRUCT OTHERS TO DUCK, COVER, AND HOLD!

Stay away from glass windows, wall shelves, and heavy equipment.

DO NOT RUN OUTSIDE. DO NOT EVACUATE UNTIL AFTER TREMORS CEASE. Be aware that earthquake aftershocks may cause further damage.

Once the main tremor has ceased, calmly evacuate buildings to evacuation assembly area. Assist those with physical disabilities. Refer to section on evacuation.

The Emergency Operations Center (EOC) will be activated. The West Valley College Primary EOC is located in the enclosed compound across East College Circle from the theater between parking lots 1 and 7. The Secondary or Alternate EOC is in AAS-37. If both locations are unusable, the primary outdoor EOC is Lot 5 and the secondary outdoor EOC is Lot 3. A mobile EOC may be used on an as-needed basis. Stay away from the Emergency Operations Center unless you have an emergency. Instead, communicate with the Building Monitor. If you are a member of the College IMT or CERT, turn responsibility of your class over to another faculty or staff member and respond to your reassigned assembly area.
Building Monitors, Division Chair, Office Coordinator, IMT, or CERT member or other trained person(s) should utilize any equipment prepositioned in their building.

Injuries or damaged facilities should be reported to the Building Monitor, supervisor, or CERT member. They will advise the EOC.

GAS LEAKS - If you smell gas, cease all operations. DO NOT SWITCH LIGHTS ON OR OFF. Vacate the building and then notify the Building Monitor, Supervisor, CERT member, or EOC.

HAZARDOUS MATERIALS INCIDENT - Some gases are odorless and colorless. Do not enter any areas where hazardous materials are stored or suspected until uniformed personnel or other trained authorized person has inspected and cleared the areas.

If Outdoors:

Quickly move at least 300 feet away from buildings, utility poles, and other structures. CAUTION: ALWAYS avoid power or utility lines.
