Services We Offer
Peer Advising
Overall, Peer Advisors are students who are trained to listen, honor, and inform students about the college experience. Additionally, a Peer Advisor may help you to obtain campus and community resources to help you complete your educational and personal goals. Academic, Career, and Personal Counseling The comprehensive case management approach supports the EOPS and/or CARE student in completing his/her
educational goals. "Case management" means that each student is assigned a primary counselor who monitors academic progress.
This ensures that students receive individualized attention during their academic journey at West Valley College. The
counseling component includes the following:
Personal Counseling - Counselors provide short-term personal counseling to students who are going through a difficult time in his or her life. We can also refer students to campus based and outside community resources (ie: Housing, Social Services, 2nd Harvest Food Bank, Medical and Child Care). Career - EOPS provides opportunities for students to explore career information by using Eureka Career Search software available in our EOPS computer lab. Additional Counseling Services include:
Transfer Assistance Counselors encourage students to continue their education and transfer to a four-year university. We assist students in filling out the applications to universities, issue admissions application fee waivers to those universities that accept them, and advise students to participate in the Transfer Admission Agreement process (TAA) for those universities that participate in this program. An educational plan is prepared for the student that will expedite the transfer process. If an EOPS student, in good standing, transfers to San Jose State University, he or she may be automatically accepted into the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) there. EOPS Eligibility Assistance The EOPS Recruiter is ready to assist you in the eligibility process. This process includes filling out the application for admission to the college; referral for English and Math assessment testing; completion of various forms, such as the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), Board of Governor's Waiver (BOGW), and the EOPS application. Priority Registration EOPS students are provided an opportunity to register at the end each semester for the following semester. EOPS students can register in courses prior to the general population of students, which ensures enrollment in classes. This is an important service, which EOPS offers our students and one that all students should utilize. Tutorial Services Free tutoring for EOPS students is available in the West Valley College Tutorial Center. Students can request up to 4 hours per week of individualized tutoring and for unlimited drop-in tutoring. Book Service Book service is offered to students at the completion of their 1st contact according to number of units, unmet financial need, and availability of program funds. Money Grants Each semester EOPS students with unmet financial need receive a grant "over and above" the assistance that Financial Aid has awarded. This is considered free money, and is not a loan. Emergency Loans An Emergency Loan is a service that is available to EOPS students who are experiencing personal difficulties which could interfere with academic progress. Examples of use of finds include food, rent, transportation and educational supplies. This is a loan and must be paid within a contracted time limit. University Campus Tours In cooperation with other EOPS programs on other community college campuses, EOPS schedules tours of a selection of University of California (UC), California State University (CSU) and private university campuses during the academic year. EOPS believes it is important that students visit campuses to observe differences between various environments. Additional Services Our staff recognizes that there are many conditions in a student's life that contribute to academic success. Therefore, EOPS provides additional support services depending on program budget availability. Examples include: bus passes, gas cards, campus food coupons, school supplies, referrals to community resources, loans of scientific calculators, and donation book library. |
