One of the most valuable services provided by the Educational Transition (ET) Adult
Reentry Program is counseling for academic, career and personal concerns. All
of us who work in ET recognize that adults return to formal education for a variety
of complex and unique reasons.
During the first counseling session, many want adequate time to discuss specific needs, responsibilities,
barriers and concerns which may affect their lives as college students. To focus
on both personal and academic needs, the first counseling appointment in ET
is scheduled for one hour.
Subsequent appointments are normally scheduled for 30 minutes unless students
personally request a longer counseling session. Students are advised to see
their ET counselor at least once each academic year to revise their educational
plans. As needs arise, students are also encouraged to make more frequent counseling
appointments.
ET offers the following counseling services for adult learners:
Academic Counseling:ET offers guidance in setting educational goals, selecting courses and assisting students in developing their educational plans. We also provide information on course requirements for West Valley College certificate/degree programs and transfer preparation for California State University (CSU), University of California (U.C.), and many private or out-of-state colleges and universities.
Career Counseling:
ET provides the opportunity for students to explore, understand and clarify career possibilities as they relate to personal needs, wants, values and interests. Students are assisted in integrating their educational direction with career/vocational objectives. On a limited basis, students can also complete assessment for personality and interests to discover potential career directions.
Personal Counseling:
ET offers emotional support to students who need assistance in resolving personal, relational, self-esteem or stress related problems which may interfere with their ability to pursue a college education. On campus or community referrals are provided to students who may need intensive, ongoing personal counseling.
Testing and Assessment:
ET offers special assessment sessions for English, Reading and Math placement at West Valley College.
Orientation and Assessment:
During registration periods, adult students may have the opportunity to complete orientation and assessment in ET. Contact the ET office at (408) 741-2022 to find out when special orientation and assessment sessions are available.
Please give us a call or stop by the ET Office located in the Learning Services Building (LS) if you would like more information about how we can help you.
