CAREER INFORMATION
This certificate is designed for working patternmakers who need to upgrade their skills and for individuals interested in using the computer as a tool to create patterns. Completion of this certificate prepares individuals to enter any part of the sewn product industry as a computer patternmaker in a sample room or the product engineering department of large or small firms.
Demand for computer patternmakers currently outstrips supply. The ability to effectively use the computer to make patterns and grade them into size ranges makes an individual particularly attractive in today's job market. In addition to the apparel industry, these skills are applicable to the manufacturing of any sewn products, including toys, airline interiors, home furnishings outdoor equipment and industrial products.
Individuals interested in careers in electronic grading and/or marking must have a thorough knowledge of design engineering and manufacturing methods. They must have a solid foundation in flat patternmaking techniques and theory and fabric construction and behavior. Computer literacy is essential with specific knowledge of computer assisted manufacturing systems. Graders and marker makers entering the apparel field must understand apparel construction, body proportion and garment fitting, as well as the principles of mass production.
Electronic graders and marker makers must be detail oriented and exact in their skills, and be comfortable with computer technology. They must be able to work independently with minimal supervision. Because they are often involved in solving problems, they must also function as a member of a team and posses excellent verbal and written communication skills. Graders and marker makers often interact with patternmakers who represent many nationalities. The ability to speak Chinese or other Asian languages or Spanish is an asset. An appreciation of cultural diversity is essential.
CAREER PATHS
The San Francisco bay area is the third largest apparel producing region in the United States. Hundreds of apparel manufacturers, suppliers and related businesses provide many opportunities for employment in the industry. Entry level positions for individuals earning an Electronic Grading or Marking Certificate include:
- CAD Grader
- CAD Marker
- Digitizer
Entry level pay ranges: $18,000 to $30,000. Industry professionals augmenting their work experience by earning an Electronic Grading and Marking Certificate can expect to increase their employability significantly. Pay varies based on previous experience and the employer's need.
