MDEP Student Center - Beginning SCUBA

Beginning SCUBA is the first step toward obtaining an open water certification and a foundation course for obtaining an MDEP certificate.

Getting Certified

Earning a world-recognized scuba certification requires successful completion of classroom, pool, and open water training.

Successful completion of classroom training requires:
- Attendance and participation in lecture activities.
- Satisfactory completion of Study Guides and Quizzes.
- 80% or higher score on written exam.

Successful completion of pool training requires:
- Attendance and participation in pool activities.
- Satisfactory completion of swim test.
- Satisfactory demonstration of scuba and skin diving skills.

Successful completion of open ocean training requires:
- Satisfactory demonstration of scuba skills in an open water environment.
- Completion of at least 4 open water dives and one skin dive.

Important: Qualified students have two options for completing open water training:
- Arrange for open water training on a contractual basis with their current instructors. This is the typical training path--ocean training dates are scheduled to coincide with semester and summer session beginning scuba courses.
- Obtain a Universal SCUBA Referral Form and perform ocean dives with other instructors.
