PKMGT 24: WILDERNESS NAVIGATION (Section #52747) This land navigation course is intended to give the student a through understanding and skills in reading and using topographic maps, the compass, terrain reading and interpretation, and putting it all together to navigate in the wilderness. This course will also cover using Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers and basic desktop computer mapping programs. Instructor: John Carnes Class meets Fri/Sat/Sun over two weekends: January 5-7 and January 19-21 (does not meet the weekend in between). Begin/end times are: Fridays from 6-9pm, Saturdays from 8am-5pm and Sundays from 8am-4pm.
PKMGT 19: WILDERNESS FIRST RESPONDER (Section #52201) This 90-hour course of lecture and supervised practical exercises provides
public land agency personnel, outdoor leaders, guides, and wilderness
travelers with a thorough understanding of the basic principles of emergency
medical care in both urban and wilderness environments. This course consists
of the Federal DOT First Responder curriculum and additional protocols
to meet the specific needs of the emergency medical care in remote environments.
Certificates upon successful completion of course. I strongly urge students
to get the books before the class starts and begin reading. All students
must show proof of a current CPR for the Professional Rescuer at the conclusion
of this course. A special one-day CPR course will be offered February
2, 2006. There will be an extra fee for the CPR class of approximately
$10 that will collected the day of the class. Instructor: Kim Aufhauser This course meets Monday & Wednesday evenings for 7 weeks (January 29 - March 21, 2007) plus has two required field trips. Trip Dates: February 16-18 and March 9-11
PKMGT 13: WILDLAND FIRE SUPPRESSION (Basic "Red Card" Training) (Section #52635) This course provides the training necessary for the federal Interagency "RED" card for wildland firefighter. Subjects include ignition, behavior, and spread of forest fires, influence and role of topography and fuels, philosophy behind prescribed fire, fire suppression equipment, methods of fire prevention and suppression, Incident Command System, and the national wildland fire control organizations. PKMGT 23: Powersaws (Section #52204) This course is designed to meet federal training requirements to work as a chainsaw operator. The students will have the opportunity to learn the powersaw mechanics and operation, basic field maintenance, bucking, falling, and brush clearing. Credit/No Credit Option. REQUIRED EQUIPMENT for every class meeting: 8" high lace-up boots with non-skid soles, long pants and shirt, safety glasses with clear side protection, ear plugs, gloves, food & water for the day, first aid kit, whistle, note book, and knapsack to carry personal items.
