SUCCESS Program
The Students Using Cross-Cultural Educational & Support Services, or SUCCESS program, seeks to assist students in developing skills for a successful college experience. The Program targets African Americans yet includes those from other ethnicities who feel that they might benefit from the services of the program. The purpose of the SUCCESS Program is to provide academic and personal support that will significantly increase graduation and transfer rates.
Program Courses
The courses offered by the Program focus around the African American experience.
- English 905 - English Fundamentals (Fall semester)
- English 1A - English Composition (Spring semester)
- Couns1,5, or 12B

Services
- Counseling
Carolyn Nash, program counselor, is dedicated to providing every SUCCESS student with the proper guidance necessary to transfer successfully. SUCCESS students are required to meet at least three times with the director throughout the semester in order to facilitate the following:
- create educational plans
- track course and transferring progress
- keep up to date with activities
- Instruction
Paulette Boudreaux, the program's instructional coordinator, is a highly qualified English and writing professional. She teaches the English 905 and English 1A courses, as well as co-coordinates some program activites.

A limited number of scholarships are provided to SUCCESS students. For other information about grants and scholarships see Financial Aid.
- Campus Tours
SUCCESS visits several four college universities throughtout the year. Past tours have included UC Santa Cruz, UC Berkeley, San Jose State Universite, Santa Clara University, and San Francisco State University.
- Mentoring
Personal, professional, academic and peer mentors are ready and willing to assist you with your college decisions and career. Our mentors are selected from some of the top corporations in the bay area, as well as, West Valley College staff and faculty. SUCCESS students are matched with compatible mentors.
- Transferring
SUCCESS has contributed to the preparation for transfer of African American students to UC, CSU, and private universities throughout the country.
