BEST ESSAYS CONTEST AND ANTHOLOGY

Sponsored by the English Department at West Valley College

Guidelines

For Entry Form, Please Click Here

  1. Each entry must be the original, previously unpublished work of the contestant.
  2. The contestant must have written the entry during the Spring, Summer, or Fall of each academic year for an English 1A, 1B, or 1C course at West Valley College.
  3. Entries are limited to two essays per composition course per contestant.
  4. Three identical copies, free of the instructor’s and the contestant’s handwritten notes, of each essay must be submitted.
  5. The contestant’s and instructor’s names should be printed on the entry form but not on the essay.
  6. The Social Security # of the contestant should be placed at the top left corner of each page of the essay.
  7. The entry must be typed in a simple size 12 font and be double spaced.
  8. An Official Entry Form, which may be photocopied, should be attached to the front of each essay.
  9. Entries may be dropped off in the box labeled "Best Essays Contest," outside of Language Arts 3F or mailed to:

  10. All entries must be received or postmarked according to the deadline. Please see the application for deadlines during the current academic year.
  11. The decisions of the judges are final. Judges reserve the right to deny an award if entries do not meet competition guidelines.
  12. In each academic year, entries will be read and 8-12 essays will be chosen for publication in a variety of different winning categories. (Please see application for details)
  13. Winners selected for publication in the anthology will receive cash awards. Honorable mentions will not receive cash awards. Contest winners will be notified by email and/or phone, and the anthology will be printed and distributed on campus and in the surrounding community as soon as possible. Non-winning contestants will not be informed personally but may expect an announcement of winners’ names in The Norseman.
  14. Winners will be honored in a ceremony on campus, at which time copies of the anthology and cash award checks will be distributed.
