Community Service Learning

There are two components to this Enhancement assignment:

*        2 hours of volunteer work with a nonprofit community service agency

*        Critical reflection on the personal meaning and social relevance of your service work.

·        Locate a nonprofit community service agency and contribute 2 hours of service to it.

Note: If you want to contribute service that is not connected to a nonprofit agency, be sure to obtain approval from your classroom instructor.

·        Obtain a letter, on agency stationery, verifying the dates and hours of your service.

·        Write a 2-page reflection paper on your experience. This paper should contain 4 sections with 1 paragraph in each section. The 4 paragraphs should be of equal length.

Use the following titles and write 1 paragraph on each of these topics:

1.      The agency: Describe the agency briefly. What social problem does the agency seek to address? How does the agency’s work attempt to solve this problem?

2.      Service work: Describe your volunteer work and evaluate it. What insights into yourself did you gain through your service? What insights into the problem did you gain? How useful was your service?

3.      Personal mission: Why do you personally care about this problem? In the future as you pursue your career goals, how might you use your talents to continue to be involved in seeking a solution to the problem?

4.      Social vision: What actions could our society take to find solutions to the problem?
