BEST ESSAYS CONTEST AND ANTHOLOGY

Guidelines

  1. Each entry must be the original, previously unpublished work of the contestant.
  2. The contestant must have written the entry during the Spring, Summer, or Fall of 2001 for an English 1A, 1B, or 1C course at West Valley College.
  3. Entries are limited to two essays per composition course per contestant.
  4. Two identical copies–free of the instructor’s and the contestant’s handwritten notes–of each essay must be submitted.
  5. The contestant’s and instructor’s names should be printed on the entry form but not on the essay.
  6. The Social Security # of the contestant should be placed at the top left corner of each page of the essay.
  7. The entry must be typed in a simple size 12 font and be double spaced.
  8. An Official Entry Form, which may be photocopied, should be attached to the front of each essay.
  9. Entries may be dropped off in the box labeled "Best Essays Contest," outside of Language Arts 3f or mailed to:

  10. All entries must be received or postmarked according to the following deadlines. For entries written in the:

    Summer ‘01 Semester July 27, 2001

    Fall ‘01 Semester December 19, 2001

  11. The decisions of the judges are final. Judges reserve the right to deny an award if entries do not meet competition guidelines.
  12. In January ’02, entries will be read and 12-15 essays will be chosen for the anthology. In February ’02, contestants will be informed of their entries’ statuses, and the award winning essays will be printed and distributed on campus and in the surrounding community.
  13. Winners will be honored in a ceremony on campus, and the top three winners will be given cash awards.
