Coaching Staff
Head Coach Jim Root
Coach
Root is one of the most decorated coaches on staff.
With over 40 years of coaching experience and many Coach
of the Year honors to boast, the Hayward native continues
to produce champions on a yearly basis. Coach Root joined
the Vikings in 1972 and his training regime has spawned
many world class athletes and team championships. He
has been named NorCal Coach of the Year 7 times and
was named Coach of the Year by the California Coaches
Association in 1992 and 1995. An Olympic Trials Finalist
himself in 1956 and 1960, Coach Root has garnered an
unprecedented overall coaching record of 263-137-5.
Assistant Coach Ricardo Garcia
Coach Garcia is no stranger to the Viking program.
The National Champion from Mexico was a former wrestler
for the Vikings and saw a lot of success. He continued
his career at the University of New Mexico where he
won the WAC 190lb title and qualified for the NCAA Tournament.
Coach Garcia also coaches at Evergreen Valley High School.
Assistant Coach Bobby Soto
A former Caifornia State runner-up while at Fremont
HS, Coach Soto joins the Viking staff this Fall and
will be the main coach in the practice room. For the
past 6 years, he has been one of the top coaches in
the CCS while at Fremont HS. As an athlete Coach Soto
was a 2-time Pac-10 placer and an NCAA qualifier with
Cal State Bakersfield.
Assistant Coach Shawn Henerby
Another former All-American as a Viking returns to West
Valley to help the program. After WVC Coach Henerby
competed for Cal State Fullerton. He is currently teaching
and coaching at Overfelt HS as well.
Assistant Coach Edgar Hernandez
Coach Hernandez also returns to his roots after
competing for Cal State Fullerton to share his collegiate
experiences with this young group of Vikings. |
