Phillips
Named All-American
May 21, 2006
Bakersfield - West Valley College athletes
battled with the best in the State in the
heat of Bakersfield yesterday at the 2006
CA State Championships. Of the four Vikings
competing, two would walk away with medals,
and one earned All-American status (top
4).
Steven
Phillips toed the line on Saturday ranked
5th in the men's 3000m steeplechase. The
sophomore held on to the lead runners for
much of the race and his finishing kick
helped him catch the 4th place runner at
the line. The photo finish found both men
running the same time of 9:41.77. So with
a tie for 4th and a new lifetime best, Phillips
finishes his season as an All-American.
Sophomore
Stevie Odle also earned a state meet medal
with her 8th place finish in the women's
pole vault with clearance of 10-1. Fellow
sophomores Emma Asiyo and Christine Nguyen
each placed 9th in their respective events.

Will Send Three Athletes to the State Championships
~ Phillips
Crowned NorCal Champion ~
May 14, 2006
Sacramento
- West Valley College will have three athletes
competing at this year's California State
Championships to be held at Bakersfield
College on May 20th. To get there, many
Vikings competed at the Northern California
Championship Finals yesterday at Sacramento
City College.
The
day was highlighted by Steven Phillips'
win in the men's 3000m Steeplechase (10:07).
Although it was slower than his previous
best in the event, Phillips (at left)
still beat the nearest competitor by
10 seconds and will compete next week against
the top in the State. The sophomore would
later come back in the 800m to run a new
lifetime best of 1:56.37, good enough for
5th place. Unfortunately, only the top 4
in that event qualified for the State Championships.
Fellow
sophomore Christine Nguyen will make a repeat
appearance at the State Championships in
the 100m hurdles as she finished in 2nd
yesterday in a season best time of 15.85.
Nguyen was also a member of both relay teams
that ran season bests (50.71 and 4:07.01)
but just missed qualifying.
Sophomore
Stevie Odle was the first of the three to
stamp her ticket to State next week. Odle
finished 3rd after a judges decision in
the women's pole vault with a clearance
of 10-7. Odle was also a member of both
relays.
All
three Viking athletes also earned All-NorCal
honors with their top 4 finishes.

Valley Battles With the Best of the North
May 7, 2006
San
Mateo - Many Vikings competed at College
of San Mateo again this week in the Trials
of the Northern California Championships.
All events contested were prelims for next
week's Finals to be held at Sac City.
Sophomore
Christine Nguyen (at right), finished
2nd in her heat and 3rd overall in the women's
100m hurdles in a season best of 16.26.
She would later qualify in the 400m hurdles
with the 7th fastest time of the day, but
she will scratch the event to focus on the
short hurdle race and the relays. Fellow
soph, Emma Asiyo, also qualified in two
events, the 200m and 400m.
Freshman
Nick Gancayco, will move on in the men's
200m ranked 9th. Gancayco is also a member
of both relay teams that qualified for the
finals. Soph Steven Phillips would also
qualify for the finals in both the 1500m
(4:09) and 800m (1:57); however, he will
scratch the 1500m and concentrate on the
3k Steeplechase/800m/4x400m triple.
The
Vikings will travel north to Sacramento
City College on Saturday for the NorCal
Finals. From that meet, the top 4 in lane
events and top 6 in the distance races will

All-Conference Honors Awarded in Championships
~
May 1, 2006
San

respective events at this years Coast Conference
Championships.
Steven
Phillips (at left) started off
the day for our Vikings with a win in the
men's 3000m Steeplechase (9:42) and finished

Christine
Nguyen successfully defended her title in
the women's 100m hurdles with a season best

4th. Nguyen was also a member of both relays.
Freshman

again as he would finish 3rd in the men's
200m with a time of 21.67. This time now
puts him with the 8th fastest time in school
history. Earlier in the day he improved
his best in the 100m to 10.88, good enough
for 4th place. Gancayco was also an integral
member of both relay teams.
Other
All-Conference performers (Top 3) included
freshman Cristina Diaz (Willow Glen '05)
in the women's 3k steeplechase (13:36).

by a West Valley athlete. Sophomore Emma
Asiyo collected a pair of individual honors
with her 2nd place finish in the women's
400m (59.59) and 3rd place in the 200m (25.46).

Odle
Becomes First Conference Champ
April 26, 2006
San
Mateo - Day one of this year's Coast Conference
Championships ended with smiles as one athlete
collected a win, and most set new bests
in the preliminary rounds. Sophomore Stevie
Odle (at right) bettered her own
school record with an 11-0 clearance in
the pole vault and became the first Viking
to be named Conf Champion. Her clearance
would also be a new Conference Meet record.
She would later qualify for Saturday's final
of the women's 200m.
Nick Gancayco also had a great day during
the trials. The freshman won his heat of
the 200m with a time of 21.87. The time
now puts him at #10 on our All-Time List.
Earlier in the day he ran a qualifying time
in the 100m as well (10.92). Gancayco will
also compete in both relays on Saturday.
Redshirt frosh, Will Alleshouse ran a qualifying

Viking Invitational Stays Dry For Athletes
April 15, 2006
Pleasant
Hill - This was the final opportunity for
West Valley to get in some new marks before
the conference championships. Fortunately
the rain stayed away, but the strong head
wind into the finish didn't help for blazing
times.
Steven Phillips ran an impressive double
and walked away with two personal bests.
It came down to a photo finish in the 1500m
(4:08) which found the soph just missing
the win. He would later come back and take
off 45 seconds from his best time in the
men's 5000m. A final time of 16:13.1h (online
results incorrect) finds Phillips ranked
in the top 6 in Conf for each of his events
run this season. The men's 4x100m relay
team lowered their time again this week
(43.13).
Freshman
Maria Arzate improved her best in the discus
with a throw of 98-1. That mark also moves
her up to #8 on the WVC All-Time list. Sophomore
Christine Nguyen (at left) collected
a win in the women's 100m hurdles (17.18)
and a runner-up finish in the 400m hurdles
(73.15).

Vikings gear up for the Coast Conference
Championships to be held at College of San

Valley Athletes Improve at Johnny Mathis
Invite
April 9, 2006
San
Francisco - The sun poked through
the clouds long enough for some season bests
to be run at this year's Johnny Mathis Invite
at San Francisco State.
Both
the men's and women's 4x100m relay teams
improved their times to 43.20 and 51.16,
respectively, with the men capturing the
overall win in the event. The ladies 4x400m
relay also lowered their team time to 4:12.
Individually,
redshirt frosh William Alleshouse ran a
solid 50.97 for the one-lap event. He returned
to improve his 200m time as well (23.00).

in the 100m (11.02). Freshman Terry Newsome
bettered his mark in the men's long jump
to 19-8.

made a mark on our record books as the two
raced in the 3000m steeplechase event. Diaz

Some
Vikings Compete at the Stanford Invite
April 2, 2006
Palo
Alto - This year's Stanford Invitational
allowed some of our athletes to gain valuable
experience by competing side by side with
some of the countries best. Because of the
strict entry standards, only two sprinters
were able to compete in individual events.
Both of the men's relays teams also got
in.
Nick
Gancayco ran in the 100m and 200m events.
The freshman won his heat of the 200m with
a time of 22.30, which was good enough for
a 7th place finish in the "B"
sections. Sophomore Emma Asiyo competed
in the women's 100m. The men's 4x100 and
4x400m relay teams finished the day with
times of 43.62 and 3:29.08.
The
Vikings travel to San Francisco State this
week for the Johnny Mathis Invite on Friday
and Saturday. Competitors will include local
JC's, 4-year Universities, and post-collegiate
athletes as well. If the weather holds up,
some fast times and solid marks will be
earned.

Valley Runs Well at Home Meet
March 23, 2006
Saratoga
- Many Vikings continued to lower their
season bests at this year's West Valley
Open. Local community college, 4-year universities,
and post-collegiate athletes were in attendance
during the great day of weather.
Sophomore
Steven Phillips (at right) highlighted
the day with his impressive triple. Phillips
ran the 1500m, 800m, and anchored the 4x400m
relay team. In each of the races, he improved
his season bests to 4:10, 2:01, and 50.3.
Freshman Nick Gancayco also had an impressive
day with a win in the men's 200 (22.08)
and a 2nd place finish in the 100m (11.06),
both in season bests.
Stevie
Odle had a very busy day as she competed
in nine events within the 3 hours of the
meet. The sophomore was trying to get marks
in order to qualify for the NorCal Heptathlon,
but unfortunately may have come up a bit
short in a few events. Sophomore Emma Asiyo
improved her best in the women's 200m, which
also improves her time on the WVC
All-Time list in the #8 position. Freshman
Maria Arzate has also made another mark
on our All-Time list, this time in the women's
shot put. Her mark of 31-2.5 now puts her

Vikings
Bring Home Wins From Sacramento
March 18, 2006
Sacramento
- Clear skies greeted our athletes for the
first time in awhile, so the goal was to
take advantage of it and post some good
marks. Unfortunately, most of the races
found a brutal head wind as the athletes
came down the home stretch. But that didn't
stop some from finishing on top.
Nick
Gancayco (at left), who has already
run 11.1 this season, won the 100m and 200m
events against some solid names. He would
also run very strong legs on both relays.
Sophomore Steven Phillips started the day
with a nice win the men's 3000m Steeplechase
with a time of 10:20 (ranks 3rd in NorCal
as of 3/18).
Freshman
Kathrin Brenner would also run the 3000m
Steeplechase for the first time and would
record a solid 13:53 effort. The time puts
Brenner at #3 on
West Valley's All-Time list for that
event. The women's 4x100m relay continues
to lower their season best, this week with
a 51.67 clocking which brings them to #5
on the All-Time list.
Now
the Vikings have a busy weekend ahead. We
stay home and host the West Valley Open
Invite on Thursday March 23rd with the first
event starting at 2pm. Then on Friday and
Saturday, the Vikings host the 30th
Annual West Valley Relays. The event
is one of the biggest and longest standing
high school Invitationals in the area. This
year will be no different as 50 schools
are registered with over 1200 athletes joining
in on the fun.
Come
out and support your Vikings on Thursday,
and watch some impressive high school races
on Friday and Saturday.

Odle
Sets New School Record at the Beaver Relays
March 5, 2006
Sacramento
- In a day filled with many seasonal bests,
one result stood out among them all. At
this year's Beaver Relays, hosted by American
River College, former Del Mar HS star, Stevie
Odle (at right) broke a school
record that was set more than 10 years ago.
The recent transfer from Chico State cleared
10' 6" in the women's pole vault on
Saturday to set a new school record for
West Valley College. The vault was good
enough for a second place performance.
Odle
soon anchored the 4x100m relay team that
finished with the 8th best time in school
history (52.20). She was also a member of
the sprint medley relay and 4x400m relay
teams which all finished 3rd overall. The
women's distance medley squad also took
the bronze for their efforts over the 4000m
event.
The
men would also have a successful day, including
their second place performance in the sprint
medley relay. Sophomore Steven Phillips
anchored the SMR with his first sub-2min
performance of the season (1:59.9). The
day also included season bests in the 4x100
and 4x400m relay events. For complete results,
please visit our 2006 schedule. While there,
mark your calendars so you can catch some
action.
The
Vikings will travel to Modesto on Friday
for the Jack Albiani Classic Invite where
many more marks are sure to improve. Stay

PLEASANT
HILL - The Viking tracksters competed at
Diablo Valley College on Thursday against
some new and some familiar faces. The 5-way
meet brought in De Anza, San Mateo, and
Laney College as well. A few Viking sprinters
walked away with individual wins.
Freshman
Pat Hopkins (at left), won the
men's 400m in a season best of 52.32. Hopkins
would later win his heat of the 200m and
finish 3rd overall (23.51). Frosh, Nick
Gancayco, would continue to impress with
his double win in the 100m and 200m events
(11.30 and 22.67). Both Mitty graduates,
Gancayco and Hopkins also ran on both relay
teams.
Sophomore
Emma Asiyo started the day by leading off
for our women's 4x100m relay team as they
ran the 10th fastest time in school history

from this event over the years. The men's
sprint medley (2-2-4-8) with a time of 3:23.21
and the men's 4x1600 (17:06.3). This year's

Vikings
Host 4-Way Meet
February 18, 2006
SARATOGA
- One of the first NorCal Rotationals of
the season was held at West Valley College
yesterday. Joining the Vikings were Hartnell,
City College of San Francisco, and Modesto
Junior College (Marin and Laney College
were unable to make it). Unfortunately the
rainy weather put a damper on parts of the
day, and for safety reasons a few events
were cancelled. But a break in the showers
allowed for most athletes to get a mark.
Sophomore
Emma Asiyo (at right) opened up
her outdoor season yesterday in the 100m
and 200m races (13.18 and 26.77), she ended
the day in the women's 4x400m relay. Freshman
Jaime Hoyt led our distance ladies in the
1500m and 800m double (5:37 and 2:49). Hoyt
also anchored our 4x400m relay team.
Former
Mitty standout, freshman Nick Gancayco,
had another solid outing which included
a 3rd place finish in the 200m (22.55) on
the wet track. Sophomore Steven Phillips
led our distance men in the 1500m and 800m
events (4:22 and 2:04) and would later anchor
our 4x400m relay team.
Next
for the Vikings is the second NorCal Rotational
to be held at Diablo Valley College on Thursday,
Feb 23rd. Hopefully the weather holds up
for some fast times and good marks.

Valley Opens Season With Solid Marks
February 10, 2006
SAN
JOSE - This year's Coast Conference Preview
gave our athletes the opportunity to test
their hard work over the winter break in
an unscored competition against their conference
opponents. Perfect weather greeted everybody
and many solid marks were put up in all
events.
Even
though West Valley is small in numbers this
year, we definitely didn't go unnoticed.
Many Vikings were able to finish in the
top 2 of their heats, with the men's 4x100m
relay team earning a win with a time of
43.69 (Steven Reeves, Nick Gancayco, Pat
Hopkins, Will Alleshouse). Gancayco (at
left) (11.10-100m, 22.54 - 200m) and
Alleshouse (52.83 - 400m) would also later
each win heats of their respective individual
races. Freshman Terry Newsome would also
secure a win in his heat of the 200m with
a time of 23.91. Sophomore, and defending
Conference Champion, Christine Nguyen narrowly
missed a win in the 100m hurdles, but clocked
a solid early season mark of 16.81.
In
the distance events, sophomore transfer
Steven Phillips would turn heads with his
come from behind sprint finish to just miss
the win in the men's 3000m (9:26.05). Freshman
Jaime Hoyt would place 3rd in the women's
3k with a time of 12:22.68.
In
the field, freshman Maria Arzate placed
3rd in the discus with a throw of 91-05,
which was good enough to crack onto our
All-Time
Top 10 list at #10. Arzate also competed
in the shot put and finished in 6th.
The
Vikings will compete again this week as
they host the first round of the NorCal
Rotational vs Hartnell, CCSF, Modesto, Laney,
and Marin College. Competition is on Friday
(2/17) starting at 2pm. Come support your
2006 West Valley Track & Field team
