Phillips Named All-American
May 21, 2006

Bakersfield - West Valley College athletes battled with the best in the State in the heat of Bakersfield yesterday at the 2006 CA State Championships. Of the four Vikings competing, two would walk away with medals, and one earned All-American status (top 4).

Steven Phillips toed the line on Saturday ranked 5th in the men's 3000m steeplechase. The sophomore held on to the lead runners for much of the race and his finishing kick helped him catch the 4th place runner at the line. The photo finish found both men running the same time of 9:41.77. So with a tie for 4th and a new lifetime best, Phillips finishes his season as an All-American.

Sophomore Stevie Odle also earned a state meet medal with her 8th place finish in the women's pole vault with clearance of 10-1. Fellow sophomores Emma Asiyo and Christine Nguyen each placed 9th in their respective events. - Complete Results -

Vikings Will Send Three Athletes to the State Championships
~ Phillips Crowned NorCal Champion ~
May 14, 2006

Sacramento - West Valley College will have three athletes competing at this year's California State Championships to be held at Bakersfield College on May 20th. To get there, many Vikings competed at the Northern California Championship Finals yesterday at Sacramento City College.

The day was highlighted by Steven Phillips' win in the men's 3000m Steeplechase (10:07). Although it was slower than his previous best in the event, Phillips (at left) still beat the nearest competitor by 10 seconds and will compete next week against the top in the State. The sophomore would later come back in the 800m to run a new lifetime best of 1:56.37, good enough for 5th place. Unfortunately, only the top 4 in that event qualified for the State Championships.

Fellow sophomore Christine Nguyen will make a repeat appearance at the State Championships in the 100m hurdles as she finished in 2nd yesterday in a season best time of 15.85. Nguyen was also a member of both relay teams that ran season bests (50.71 and 4:07.01) but just missed qualifying.

Sophomore Stevie Odle was the first of the three to stamp her ticket to State next week. Odle finished 3rd after a judges decision in the women's pole vault with a clearance of 10-7. Odle was also a member of both relays.

All three Viking athletes also earned All-NorCal honors with their top 4 finishes.

She would later qualify in the 400m hurdles with the 7th fastest time of the day, but she will scratch the event to focus on the short hurdle race and the relays. Fellow soph, Emma Asiyo, also qualified in two events, the 200m and 400m.

Freshman Nick Gancayco, will move on in the men's 200m ranked 9th. Gancayco is also a member of both relay teams that qualified for the finals. Soph Steven Phillips would also qualify for the finals in both the 1500m (4:09) and 800m (1:57); however, he will scratch the 1500m and concentrate on the 3k Steeplechase/800m/4x400m triple.

The Vikings will travel north to Sacramento City College on Saturday for the NorCal Finals. From that meet, the top 4 in lane events and top 6 in the distance races will qualify for the California State Championships.

April 26, 2006Conf Champ, Stevie Odle

San Mateo - Day one of this year's Coast Conference Championships ended with smiles as one athlete collected a win, and most set new bests in the preliminary rounds. Sophomore Stevie Odle (at right) bettered her own school record with an 11-0 clearance in the pole vault and became the first Viking to be named Conf Champion. Her clearance would also be a new Conference Meet record. She would later qualify for Saturday's final of the women's 200m.

DVC Viking Invitational Stays Dry For Athletes
April 15, 2006

Christine NguyenPleasant Hill - This was the final opportunity for West Valley to get in some new marks before the conference championships. Fortunately the rain stayed away, but the strong head wind into the finish didn't help for blazing times.

Steven Phillips ran an impressive double and walked away with two personal bests. It came down to a photo finish in the 1500m (4:08) which found the soph just missing the win. He would later come back and take off 45 seconds from his best time in the men's 5000m. A final time of 16:13.1h (online results incorrect) finds Phillips ranked in the top 6 in Conf for each of his events run this season. The men's 4x100m relay team lowered their time again this week (43.13).

Freshman Maria Arzate improved her best in the discus with a throw of 98-1. That mark also moves her up to #8 on the WVC All-Time list. Sophomore Christine Nguyen (at left) collected a win in the women's 100m hurdles (17.18) and a runner-up finish in the 400m hurdles (73.15).

The Vikings gear up for the Coast Conference Championships to be held at College of San Mateo. Conference Trials will be on Wed. April 26th and the Finals will be Saturday April 29th. - Complete Results -

March 18, 2006

Gancayco en route to 100m VictorySacramento - Clear skies greeted our athletes for the first time in awhile, so the goal was to take advantage of it and post some good marks. Unfortunately, most of the races found a brutal head wind as the athletes came down the home stretch. But that didn't stop some from finishing on top.

Nick Gancayco (at left), who has already run 11.1 this season, won the 100m and 200m events against some solid names. He would also run very strong legs on both relays. Sophomore Steven Phillips started the day with a nice win the men's 3000m Steeplechase with a time of 10:20 (ranks 3rd in NorCal as of 3/18).

Freshman Kathrin Brenner would also run the 3000m Steeplechase for the first time and would record a solid 13:53 effort. The time puts Brenner at #3 on West Valley's All-Time list for that event. The women's 4x100m relay continues to lower their season best, this week with a 51.67 clocking which brings them to #5 on the All-Time list.
