Head Coach: Armen ZakarianAz head

 

     Armen Zakarian enters his first season as Head Coach for the Vikings. Prior to his current position at West Valley, Zakarian spent two years as the top assistant with Division 1 Men’s Volleyball powerhouse, UC Irvine. While at UCI, he coached 5 AVCA All-Americans and helped guide the Anteaters to the MPSF Conference Regular Season and Tournament Championship, as well as a birth in the NCAA Final Four in 2015.

    

     Zakarian came to UC Irvine after serving as Men's Volleyball Head Coach at Santa Barbara City College from 2010-2013. In 2011, he was voted Western State Conference Coach of the Year. In just 3 years with the program, Zakarian helped 11 players earn All-Conference distinction and eight players transfer to Division I-II programs.

    

     He also served as Associate Head Coach for the SBCC Women's Volleyball team. In three years with the Lady Vaqueros, the squad earned three consecutive state playoff births and captured two WSC North Titles, including 2012 with a perfect 10-0 record, and 27-3 overall in league matches.

 

     Zakarian played collegiately for the Gauchos of UC Santa Barbara. He graduated in 2007 with a B.A. in Communication, and then went on to earn his M.S. in Kinesiology from Sacramento State University in 2013, completing his thesis project on beach volleyball. An avid beach volleyball player, he has earned his AAA beach rating on several occasions on the beaches of California, having played competitively for over 10 years.

 

     Armen is currently a certified Sports Performance coach with USA Weightlifting, and has worked with USA Volleyball since 2010 as a High Performance Coach for youth athletes. He continues to grow the sport for athletes at all levels!

Assitant Coach: Alex Jones

 Alex Jones

     Alex Jones enters his first season as an assistant coach for the Vikings.  Prior to his current position at West Valley, Jones spent four seasons playing Division 1 Men's volleyball at Cal State Northridge and at the University of Hawaii.  He helped lead his team to an NCAA tournament birth in the 2015 season.
 
     Jones also played on the USA Junior National Beach Team from 2012-2014, playing in 3 world championships.  He finished as high as 5th place.   
 
     Alex came to West Valley College after serving as a boys club volleyball coach for Rockstar Volleyball Club in 2012-2015.  As a boys club coach, he won a Bronze medal at the Junior National Championships in the 14 and under division in 2013.  Jones has also served as a boys club volleyball coach at Mountain View Volleyball Club in Sunnyvale, CA and at A'o a koa Volleyball Club in Oahu, Hawaii.
 
     In addition to his club coaching experience, Alex served as a coach for the Under 17 USA Beach Volleyball program in 2014.  He led three teams to medals at the 2014 USA Beach High Performance Championships.
 
     Alex is currently a boys club volleyball coach for Bay to Bay volleyball club, and is the assistant coach at Harker high school for their Girls Varsity program.

 

Strength & Conditioning Coach: Davidson Wong             

 Davidson WOng

     Davidson has over 8 years of training experience.  He received his MA in Exercise Physiology and BS Kinesiology from SJSU.  Davidson also holds various certifications including NSCA – Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist, Functional Movement Screen (FMS) and TRX Level 1. He continues to learn every day and attends a variety of conferences and seminars throughout the year.

 

     In Davidson's words, “I believe in helping you become a better version of yourself. Whether your goal is to get stronger or improve your posture, we will work together to help you reach your ultimate goal. After working with me, you will look better, feel great and move more efficiently.

     When we first meet, we’ll begin with a postural assessment, a movement screen and discuss your goals. From there I will then build an effective program that merges your needs with your goals. Getting started can be daunting, but hopefully with an efficient and effective plan, we make the first step towards a healthier and fitter you!”
