West Valley College Institution-Set Standards
Overview
The accreditation requirements include establishing institution-set standards (ISS) for student achievement (see ACCJC standard 1.3).
ISS is the lowest acceptable level of performance. These standards serve as floor goals that the college strives to maintain and does not intend to fall below. In addition to floor goals, the college also sets stretch goals–aspirational targets–to encourage continuous improvement. These goals or institutional performance standards are set by the Accreditation and Institutional Effectiveness (AIE) Committee based on review of trend data and performance of comparable peer institutions.
The standards also require institutions to communicate results broadly across the institution to foster a shared understanding of strengths and areas needing improvement (see ACCJC standard 1.5). Every year in April, the college reports the student achievement data along with the floor and the stretch goals to ACCJC as part of (ACCJC Annual Report).
As shown in the table below, in the most recently reported year, WVC has met floor goals for all areas of student achievement and met stretch goals for Degrees and Employment (Administration of Justice and Paralegal).

Course Success Disaggregated
At WVC, we disaggregate outcomes to examine who has disproportionately lower success rates.
The graph below shows that Black/African American students, Latinx/a/o students, Native American students, and Pacific Islander students have lower course success rates than the overall rate and other groups. These equity groups are a central focus of our efforts to close achievement gaps and improve outcomes.
Disaggregated by Ethnicity
Disaggregated by First Generation Status
First-generation students also have disproportionately lower course success rates. First-generation students are also a centeral focus of our efforts to close equity gaps and improve outcomes.
