Sociology

The Associate in Arts in Sociology for Transfer is a 60 unit program which provides lower division education to students planning to transfer to a CSU and major in Sociology.

Students completing the program will be able to:

  • Analyze the major dimensions of the diversity of human social experiences using scientific discourse
  • Identify and distinguish various major theoretical perspectives within sociology and how these differ from other social science disciplines
  • Evaluate social science research methodologies and apply empirical research to human behavior

Students must complete the following requirements:

  • 60 semester or 90 quarter CSU-transferable units
  • The California State University-General Education-Breadth pattern (CSU GE-Breadth); OR the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) pattern.
  • A minimum of 18 semester or 27 quarter units in the major or area of emphasis as determined by the community college district.
  • Obtainment of a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0.
  • Earn a grade of C or better in all courses required for the major or area of emphasis.

The Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) is intended for students who plan to transfer and complete a bachelor's degree in a similar major at a CSU campus. Students completing this transfer degree:

  • will earn an Associate’s Degree from West Valley College
  • are guaranteed admission to a campus in the CSU system
  • will be prepared to start upper division coursework at the CSU
  • will not need to complete more than 60 units after transfer

Important Notes

  • Completion of 60 CSU-transferable semester units with an overall GPA of at least 2.0
  • While a minimum of 2.0 GPA is required for CSU admission, some majors may require a higher GPA. Please consult with a counselor for more information.
  • Completing courses prior to transfer that satisfy the U.S. History, Constitution and American Ideals requirement as part to the CSU GE-B or IGETC is highly recommended.
