Concurrent Enrollment Program - High School Grades 11 & 12

A great opportunity to get a head start while still enrolled in high school.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Concurrent Enrollment Program enables eligible high school students to earn college credit for courses taken at the college (one class per semester or session) while still enrolled in high school. To be eligible, high school students must be at least 16 years of age and have completed the 10th grade by the first day of college. The Concurrent Enrollment is an enrichment program, designed to provide strong students with a rewarding educational experience.

Stop by the Admissions and Records Office pick-up a concurrent enrollment packet or download the forms below. Packets are also available in college and career centers at high schools. A completed packet includes a current high school transcript.

There are no enrollment fees or basic fees for this program, but students are responsible for books,parking fees and may be required to pay material/lab fee for some classes.

Participation in the Concurrent Enrollment Program is approved on a semester by semester basis and therefore students must submit a new packet (including transcript) each semester.

Expectations and Responsibilities

STUDENT

  1. Review course offerings, noting dates, prerequisites, locations and times of class(es).
  2. Complete a West Valley College Concurrent Enrollment Application for Admission ^ ( PDF 39 KB ) *Sign and Date it.
  3. Read the Concurrent Enrollment Program Expectations and Requirements ^ ( PDF 75 KB ) *
  4. Complete a Concurrent Enrollment Program Application Form ^ ( PDF 103 KB ) * and review with your high school counselor.
  5. Make an appointment with high school Counselor, Advisor or Principal for approval of desired class(es).
  6. Complete Student Health Form ^ ( PDF 22 KB ) *
  7. Bring all forms together with your High School Transcripts, to the Admissions and Records Office at West Valley College, on the assigned date.
  8. Arrange for testing if necessary. (Check class schedule for dates and times.)
  9. Register in person..........Students may enroll in one class
  10. Attend first day of class. Students not attending the first day of class may be dropped from the class.
  11. Conduct yourself in a responsible and appropriate manner for a college environment.
  12. Ensure you meet all academic deadlines as outlined in the West Valley College Schedule of Classes.
  13. Request a copy of the transcript be sent to the high school if you are requesting high school credit. (This can be completed in the Admissions and Records Office.)
  14. For safety and liability purposes, all high school students under 18 years of age will be identified to the instructor on the class roster.
  15. Understand that classes are taught at the college level and ensure that your maturity level and preparation is appropriate to the level of the class. Your grade(s) will become part of your permanent academic record.

PARENTS

  1. Review your student's Concurrent Enrollment Petition thoroughly.
  2. Understand that classes are taught at the college level and ensure that your student's maturity level and academic preparation are appropriate for the college-learning environment. Content in some classes may not be suitable for minors.
  3. Ensure that your student has access to a parent (i.e. cell phone) in case of emergency, class cancellation, campus evacuation, black out or any non-planned event.
  4. Complete a Confidential Youth Emergency Form, to be submitted with yourcompleted packet
  5. Understand that because concurrently enrolled students are treated like any other college student, you will be required to have written authorization from your student to conduct business, (register, request transcriptson etc.), on his/her behalf. (Faculty should not be contacted directly.)

HIGH SCHOOL COUNSELOR, ADVISOR or PRINCIPAL

  1. Recommend only those classes that the student is ready to handle academically, emotionally & socially.
  2. Remind the student and parents that all classes are taught at the college level and pace.
