Geology/Oceanography Department
West Valley College
14000 Fruitvale Ave.
Saratoga, CA 95070

Degree Offered: AS, AA Geological SciencesThe Geology Department is part of the Science and Math Division located in the SM building on the north side of the West Valley College campus. A primary goal of the Geology Department is to help students understand the geological processes that affect and shape our surroundings. The underlying theme for this understanding is focused on determining plate tectonic setting. By understanding the link between geological processes and plate tectonics, students can make more intelligent choices about the environment and its connection to global processes. We offer broad introductory survey courses in earth science and earth history, and more specific courses covering local and regional geology that are presented in both the lecture and field trip formats. Our courses meet general education and transfer requirements in natural sciences. In addition, courses can be taken to satisfy requirements for an Associate of Science degree in Geological Science or transfer major requirements in geology, environmental studies, science education, civil engineering, evolutionary biology, marine science, or hydrology.
