Approvals for Programs

  1. Gather Data
    1. Why would students want this degree/certificate (estimate completers with related rationale or data)?
    2. Which courses would be part of the degree/certificate? Please organize your information like this example. If you need to create any new courses or major course revisions please also refer back to Approval for Courses and remember new courses need Board approval before they can be added to the program.
    3. For CTE programs: Is there LMI data and/or advisory board minutes to support this degree/certificate. While requesting LMI data, note that it could take more than 6 weeks to get solid data.
    4. For ADTs and UCTPs: Meet with Articulation Officer to validate the TMC, collect the associated articulation agreements/documents and verify C-ID approval for relevant courses.
    5. For Certificates: Is this a stand alone certificate that leads to a job? Or is this an add on to make someone more employable? Create a flow chart of how the degrees/certificates all work together with input from your advisory board for CTE programs. Consider including this kind of information in the program description
    6. Are there other colleges in the area competing to find students? CTE programs will need to be presented to the Bay Area Community Colleges Consortium (BACCC) to communicate with faculty leading possibly impacted programs offered within the region.
  2. Meet with department and dean to discuss fit with community college mission, rationale for new program, and need within both the district and the region.
  3. Once you have the above information, submit the Pre-Guidance Form: New Certificate or Degree Proposals and you will be contacted by the Curriculum Chair to attend a Curriculum Guidance Meeting which typically occur on Thursdays from 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM. Present your course and data to the Curriculum Chair, Articulation Officer, Vice Provost of Academic Affairs and Curriculum Specialists to see if you are ready to present to the larger curriculum committee or if more research is required.
  4. Present the degree/certificate to the full Curriculum Committee for faculty approval to develop.
  5. Any new/revised courses for the degree must be completed at the start of the fall semester to allow for necessary approvals before the degree/certificate can be created in December/Spring. (Note: new courses and any revisions to units, hours, title, subject code or course title need Curriculum approval as well).
  6. Once a degree/certificate has been approved for development it should be created in eLumen within one year. See status of proposed courses/programs.
