The WVC Democracy Institute (DI) is seeking an energetic, positive and hard-working team member to “advance democracy through education and service”. This position is in-person.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Setup and managing of social media accounts for DI, in accordance with College standards and policies;
  • Management of databases of DI participants and DI partners;
  • Assist in coordination of events sponsored by DI;
  • Research on strategies for outreach and marketing to potential participants and partners (for ex., surveys);
  • Research local and virtual events relevant to the mission of the DI;
  • Research on potential speakers and follow-up on invitations/attendance;
  • Assist in management of DI website and DI email;
  • Assist in budget management of DI;
  • Propose institute events and programs, and develop and participate in outreach efforts, based on research and student needs
  • Act as a liaison between the Democracy Institute and student activities, student government, and student clubs
  • Collaborate in creating marketing materials for the Democracy Institute
  • Assist DI Faculty Coordinators with other various tasks, as needed

Entrepreneurship Center

Duties

  • Assist in organizing center activities and events.
  • Be responsible for the center’s social media accounts.
  • Research entrepreneurship centers at other colleges and universities, industry trends, and other emerging news.
  • Propose center events and programs based on research and student needs.
  • Follow business thought leaders and related news.
  • Create marketing materials for the center
  • Assist in making the center’s space welcoming for all students.
  • Attend various school activities and events on behalf of the center and make announcements as appropriate.
  • Prepare data entry and data analytics on behalf of the center.

Health Services

Purpose or Role

The Front Office Health Services Support position is part of the LAEP-funded program at West Valley College. The primary purpose of this position is to provide administrative support in the health center while actively participating in a research project aimed at improving outreach and services for the student population. This role serves to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the Health Services department and contribute to the overall well-being of the student community.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide front office support by greeting and assisting students, faculty, and staff visiting the health center.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of student visits, medical histories, and treatment plans.
  • Schedule appointments and manage the health center's appointment system.
  • Assist with general administrative tasks, including answering phone calls, responding to emails, and organizing files and paperwork.
  • Conduct research on the student population accessing the health center to identify trends, needs, and areas for improvement.
  • Collaborate with the Health Services team to develop strategies for enhanced outreach and service delivery.
  • Assist in the implementation of outreach programs and events to promote health and wellness on campus.
  • Contribute to the development and distribution of educational materials and resources related to health topics.
  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities as required.
  • Adhere to all applicable privacy and confidentiality guidelines in handling sensitive student information.

Research Scope

As a West Valley College intern, the Front Office Health Services Support will engage in research focused on examining the student population accessing the health center. Anticipated research methods may include surveys, interviews, data analysis, and literature review. The goal is to gain insights into student needs, preferences, and barriers to accessing health services, and to propose recommendations for improving outreach and service delivery.

Duties

To create a full stack web site using enterprise Java (Java servlets and JSP on open source Tomcat/Glassfish server) that helps any CS faculty member to grade their programming assignments. There will be two types of users on this server: CS faculty members and future students. Faculty members will write the the homework problems and post them to the server, along with input vectors and expected output vectors. Students will examine the faculty's problems, write the solution program and post the solution to the server. The server will take the submitted program and compile/interpret it with the input vector. It will then compare the output with the expected output vector and grade the HW correspondingly. " Intern qualification: the intern must have taken at the minimum CIST 4A1 (Java I) with at least a B or above preferably with data structure background (CIST 4B1). The intern will use chatGPT to help them with the full stack configuration and server administration. Preference is provided to students with Linux experience. The intern is supposed to work in person, or hybrid. He or she is supposed to give me a weekly report on the progress and the source code is supposed to be version-controlled on github.

Learning-Aligned Employment Program (LAEP)

Intern will research which careers are most appealing and desirable for the WVC students and then conduct research about career preparation, salary, hiring process.

Intern will work directly with me to contact potential employers about providing internships/apprenticeships for WVC students.

Intern will research how to best connect and advertise LAEP program to students, faculty, and the community and design ads and implement advertising.

Intern will assist with the Internship Fair in October: help find and confirm employers, speakers/ workshops, work with the ASWVC and assist with marketing and logistics.

Intern will use Excel for budget monitoring and management.

Intern will prepare a summative report at the end of the semester indicating their research findings, evaluation of completed projects, and input for improving the LAEP internship preparation, marketing, and internship offerings.

Intern will work with me to determine which data needs to be gathered, monitored, researched, and analyzed. Then intern will prepare a report each semester of data to be shared with WVC executive board and Board of Trustees, in addition to compiling data for state report.

The focus of the data is:

  1. Determining how best to reach the students about LAEP.
  2. Determining how best to reach the academic and campus community about LAEP internship/apprenticeship opportunities on campus.
  3. Gathering and analyzing data for the state report, including contributing to the report—writing, editing, etc.
  4. Monitoring, measuring short-, mid-, and long-term success of interns/apprentices--job placement, job preparation, job satisfaction, success, retention, etc.
  5. Make recommendations and implementation plan for improvement.
