Acting on our commitment to be responsive, anticipate change, and prepare students for what comes next, West Valley College hosted the inaugural Future of Work Conference on campus during spring semester.

The dynamic April 24 convening brought together industry leaders, educators, nonprofit executives, students, and community members to explore and reimagine the future of work in Silicon Valley and beyond.

“From biotechnology to artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and healthcare, we are not only examining the future — we are co-creating pathways that prepare students to lead in it,” said WVC Vice President of Strategy & Equity Andrea Vizenor, whose office organized the event.

A discussion of “The Future of Work in Silicon Valley: Economic Trends, Equity, and What Comes Next” kicked off the formal program, led by speaker Julianne Malveaux, an MIT-trained economist and author. Panelists spoke on “Industries Shaping Tomorrow” in a conversation between seven guests with expertise in engineering, AI, organizational culture, public policy, and more. VP Vizenor also led a moderated talk with Jenn Lim, top-rated global speaker and author of “Beyond Happiness: How Authentic Leaders Prioritize Purpose and People for Growth and Impact.”

Scientist and self-described “futures alchemist” Knatokie Ford facilitated brief “Ignite Exchange” sessions on “Imagining 2036: New Possibilities for Work and Opportunity” and “Designing 2036: From Possibility to Pathways.”

No single industry, institution, or idea will define the future of work, said WVC President Jennifer Taylor-Mendoza.  “It will be shaped by all of us,” she said. “At West Valley College, we are not waiting to see what happens next. We are helping to create it. We are proud to Ignite the Next.”
