Vikings defeat College of the Sequoias, 59-51 to claim 2024 3C2A State title.
In a tense back and forth game, the men’s basketball team defeated College of the Sequoias 59-51 to claim the 2024 3C2A state championship held at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut, CA. Led by the State Player of the Year and Tournament MVP, Elijah Mahi, the gritty Vikings held off a resilient COS squad in a game that came down to the final seconds.
“Winning a state title is hard. Winning a state while going undefeated is REALLY hard. "This group is one of the most unselfish teams I have ever seen - a true team where every player accepts the role asked of him on a given day," said West Valley-Mission Community College District Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, John Vlahos. "They put their egos aside from the start of the year and focused on the task at hand. Mission accomplished."
Under the direction of WVC (West Valley College) alum, Coach Danny Yoshikawa, the Vikings capped a historic season with an undefeated record of 33-0—only the fifth men’s team in California Community College history to win a state title without suffering a loss.
"Coach Yoshikawa, his staff, and team epitomize all that is right about college sports," added Vlahos. "I am so proud to be a part of their journey and beyond happy for everyone involved in the program.”
