June 2026 President's Message | West Valley College

June 2026 President's Message

As we enter a new season of opportunity and renewal, we do so at a time when the world around us continues to evolve at an extraordinary pace. Rapid technological change, shifting workforce needs, and growing economic uncertainty are reshaping higher education and the communities we serve. In moments like this, the work we do at West Valley College has never been more important.

Thank you for the passion, dedication, and care you bring to West Valley College every day. Because of your dedication, our students continue to find opportunities, hope, and a place where they can achieve their goals.

This year has been one of tremendous momentum. Together, we launched our new college brand, Ignite the Next, strengthening how we tell West Valley College's story and celebrating the life-changing opportunities we create for our students. More than a tagline, Ignite the Next reflects our belief that education empowers individuals to shape their futures and contribute meaningfully to the future of our region. We celebrated the opening of the Wang & Qu Family Learning Resource Commons, advanced major strategic initiatives, strengthened partnerships across our community, and continued finding new ways to serve our students with innovation and excellence.

Perhaps one of our proudest accomplishments came just this month with the approval of West Valley College's first bachelor's degree, a Bachelor of Science in Land Stewardship and Sustainability. This historic milestone reflects our commitment to expanding affordable pathways to high-demand careers while preparing graduates to address some of the most pressing environmental and workforce challenges facing our communities.

While many of our students continue learning through summer classes, teams across campus are already hard at work preparing new initiatives, programs, and opportunities for an exciting fall semester.

We also recently celebrated one of my favorite traditions of the year: Commencement. Watching our graduates cross the stage and hearing their stories serves as a powerful reminder of why we do this work. It was an unforgettable evening filled with joy, pride, and possibility. If you missed the ceremony, I hope you'll take a few minutes to watch the inspiring keynote address by Hamilton Broadway star and television actor Bryan Terrell Clark. His message about finding your voice, leading with purpose, and embracing what comes next was a fitting reflection of the spirit of West Valley College and our commitment to Ignite the Next. Watch Clark's speech on the West Valley College YouTube channel.

Earlier this month, our leadership team gathered for our annual Summer Leadership Retreat to reflect on the past year, celebrate our accomplishments, and begin planning for an exciting year ahead. Centered on the theme, From Data to Human Impact, the retreat brought together nearly 90 administrators, faculty members, classified professionals, student leaders, community partners, and facilitators to strengthen relationships, deepen collaboration, and reaffirm our shared commitment to student success.

Together, we explored how the work we do every day connects to the lived experiences of our students, examined the opportunities and challenges shaping Silicon Valley, and identified new ways to align our efforts across the college. The conversations reinforced what makes West Valley College special: a culture grounded in collaboration, innovation, trust, and a shared commitment to putting students first. As we look ahead, we remain committed to translating these conversations into meaningful action that advances student success and institutional excellence.

I also hope each of you has an opportunity this summer to focus on your own well-being. Whether that means taking a vacation, spending time with family and friends, enjoying the outdoors, or simply finding moments to recharge, I encourage you to take advantage of this season to rest and renew. The work we do is deeply meaningful, and taking time to care for ourselves allows us to return refreshed, inspired, and ready to continue making a difference in the lives of our students.

While the future will undoubtedly bring new opportunities and challenges, I remain deeply optimistic because of this college community. Every day, you create opportunities, remove barriers, and inspire hope for our students. Together, we are not simply preparing students for the future—we are helping shape it.

Thank you for making this such an extraordinary year. I am continually inspired by your dedication, creativity, and unwavering commitment to our students and to one another. I look forward to all we will accomplish together this fall as we continue to Ignite the Next.

Have a wonderful, restful, and restorative summer.

Jennifer Taylor-Mendoza, Ph.D.
