Diego Espinoza

Biography

Diego Espinoza is a dedicated community college leader, scholar, and advocate with over 10 years of progressive experience in higher education. He currently serves as Dean of Counseling, Student Success, and Equity at Gavilan Community College, where he provides strategic leadership across a wide range of student support services, including counseling, career and transfer, student wellness, student conduct, equity initiatives, and federally funded programs. In this role, he has led transformative efforts that have increased student enrollment, retention, and graduation rates.

Prior to his current role, he served as Director of EOPS, CARE, CalWORKs, NextUp, and Undocumented Student Support at Mission College, where he significantly expanded program access, increased student participation, and launched innovative initiatives in partnership with other student services programs and offices.

Diego’s experience also includes leading Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) Title-V grant initiatives at Monterey Peninsula College, where he strengthened institutional capacity and developed programs to support first-generation and Hispanic students in achieving transfer and degree completion. His earlier work includes program development and stude

nt success initiatives funded by federal grants, as well as direct advising and college access programming for communities in South Monterey County. Diego has received multiple honors, including the Administrator of the Year Award at Mission College and the William E. Piland Award from San Diego State University, which recognizes an outstanding postsecondary educator. He is actively engaged in regional and statewide leadership, contributing to professional organizations and advisory committees focused on access and student success.

Diego holds a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership from Santa Clara University and a Bachelor of Arts in Social and Behavioral Sciences from California State University, Monterey Bay. He is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Education in Community College Leadership at San Diego State University, where he is completing his dissertation, which focuses on the experiences of Latina single mothers during the transfer process from community college to four-year universities. Fluent in both English and Spanish, Diego adopts a culturally responsive, student-centered approach in his work. He is deeply committed to empowering students and supporting classified professionals, faculty, and managers in his role.

In his free time, Diego enjoys volunteering with various groups throughout Santa Clara and Monterey County. His activities include supporting Legal Immigration Clinics with the UFW Foundation, assisting the local chapter of the Master Gardeners, and participating in other initiatives that promote community support.
